Q. Is distance learning right for me?
Distance learning is a fine choice for people who are comfortable with technology, do well learning independently, and are self starters.

Q. What kind of computer do I need?
It is imperative that your computer meets the technical requirements to have a successful experience. Please refer to the Technical Requirements page.

Q. How much computer stuff do I need to know?
Minimums:

  • Know how to connect to the Web using a web browser.
  • Able to navigate around the Web and know how to use search engines.
  • Know how to send and receive email using the email system of my choice.
  • Know how to send and receive attachments via email.
  • Able to do basic word processing, including cutting and pasting.
  • Know how to open, save, and manage files.

If you do not meet the minimum skills requirements, online learning may not be for you at the present time.

However, you can sse the linked sites of the Austrailian National Training Authority to brush up on your computer skills for computer based learning.

Q. How much does it cost to take a course?
The cost will vary and is dependent upon the topic and length of the course. The average course will cost $150 - $250.

Q. What is the length of a typical course?
A course typically lasts for six weeks.

Q. What is WebCT?
WebCT (Web Course Tool) is the primary course management system used for teaching Nuiākea online courses.

Completing the WebCT orientation in online learning is highly recommended for all first-time online students or first-time users of WebCT.

The orientation introduces you to the fundamentals of online education and provides you with tips to become a successful online student. You also get an opportunity to ask technical questions or resolve technical problems related to the use of WebCT tools before you begin your course. The online tutorial is self-paced, does not require a login and is available anytime. Visit the University of Hawai'i WebCT Support Page to view other helpful WebCT resources for students.

Q. What is my WebCT login information?
Your WebCT login information will be provided to you by the coordinator at the beginning of the student technology testing period, one week before the course begins.
