Technology and Computer Skills Minimum Requirements

Listed are the minimum hardware, software and computer skills required for a successful and rewarding on-line experience with Nuiākea courses.

Note: Nuiākea is currently using WebCT CE 4.1 to deliver on-line courses via the University of Hawaiʻi.

Computer Skills Minimum Requirements
Before you take an online class, you should be confident about your computer and study skills. Review the following list of requirements to assess your computer skills readiness to take online classes.
  • How to connect to the Web using a web browser.
  • Navigating around the Web including being familiar with using search engines.
  • How to send and receive e-mail.
  • How to send and receive attachments via email.
  • How to do basic word processing, including cutting and pasting.
  • How to open, save, and manage files.
  • How to download and install programs, or have support person available to help.
If the above tasks seem a bit much for you right now, you may not be quite ready for on-line learning. To strengthen your skills, visit the sites below.

Hardware Minimum Requirements
Operating System Windows: 2000, XP
Macintosh: OS 9.2 or higher
Processor 600 MHz or higher
Memory 128 MB of RAM
Hard Drive Space 100 MB free disk space
Internet Connection Access to internet via Dial-up, DSL, Cable Modem, T1 or higher is required
Printer Optional (check with your instructor)
CD-ROM 4x Optional (check with your instructor)
Sound Card With speakers or headphones
Monitor 15" monitor (800 x 600 resolution)
Miscellaneous Access to a digital camera or picture scanning device

Software Requirements
Windows Browsers WebCT 4.1 supports the following Windows browsers:
  • Microsoft IE versions 5.0, 5.5, 6.0
  • Netscape versions 6.2.x, 7.0 and 7.1.
  • AOL versions 7.0, 8.0, 9.0
  • Mozilla 1.5, 1.6
Macintosh Browsers WebCT CE 4.1 supports the following Macintosh browsers:
  • Safari 1.2
  • Netscape versions 6.2.x (OS 9.x and OS X), 7.0 & 7.1 (OS X)
  • Mozilla 1.5, 1.6 (OS X)
  • AOL OS X
  • Microsoft IE versions 5.1 (OS 9.x and OS X 10.1) and 5.2 (OS X 10.1, 10.2, 10.3)
Version Check Use the WebCT Browser Check and Tuneup.

AOL Nuiākea recommends that AOL users should use either any other supported browser after gaining access through AOL.
E-Mail Client Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail or any other e-mail service checked regularly.
(A web-based e-mail service is recommended but not required).

Miscellaneous Requirements (Downloads)
Streaming Audio and Video Free Quick Time Standalone Player
PDF Reader Free Adobe Reader
PowerPoint Viewer Free PowerPoint Viewer
Pop-Up Blocker The use of ad or pop-up blocker software (e.g. Pop-Up Stopper, Pop-Up Defender, Pop-Up Zapper) while logged on to WebCT will hinder the use of the quiz/survey and chat tool.

You must disable it before working in WebCT.

Keep in mind that when the computer is rebooted, the blocker software is reactivated.
